Question

UK ladies - Fertility investigation process?

UK ladies who have gone to a GP for fertility investigations after no pregnancy - what was the process you went through? What was your timeline, what investigations were done etc?

I'm at the beginning and have made contact with the GP who has arranged for a blood test to be taken on CD21 and my partner has an appointment to have a hot date with a cup...

I had concerns as my period only lasts 24 hours now and no success in trying for a baby, I don't know if the two are linked. I'd just like to hear what other people have gone through to get a better idea. Thanks!

(Not trying to exclude anyone, I'm just aware that the UK NHS investigations will be very different from US or other countries healthcare)

Hi,

I think it depends on where you live, after my day 21 test and my husbands sperm test (it took 8 weeks for his appointment) and then another two blood tests from the gp to rule everything out I was referred to a fertility assessment unit ( it took around 7 weeks for this appointment) . In the meantime I paid privately for a HSG (blocked tubes!) and took the results to the fertility assessment appointment, because I had a report and they knew what the issues were I was then sent back to my GP to refer me for ivf ( if I hadn’t of had the results I would assume this would of been investigated through the nhs). My gp then sent me for another lot of bloods (needed for the ivf referral) and sent my application to the local CCG for approval, I heard from the fertility clinic within two weeks of this approval and as am in Bristol have been lucky enough that they don’t have a waiting list. When I saw the ivf specialist she took more blood to check my egg reserves and completed an internal scan. The results came back within a week and then I was told I was ready to either wait for an operation to remove my tubes (they were damaged so reduced the chances of a successful cycle) it to begin ivf.

From beginning to end I would say roughly 10 months due to waiting lists etc but as soon as I was finally referred to the ivf clinic things moved quite quickly.

Hope this helps x
