Success story

Pregnant after 6 1/2 years on our 6th IVF attempt!

Our journey to baby felt like an eternity but we are finally expecting a little miracle in June! I hope our story will give those who have been TTCing for a long time some hope!

I threw away my bcp in March of '08 before getting married in November of '08 because we decided that whatever happens happens and if it happened by accident that would great! After 3 years with no pregnancies I was diagnosed with PCOS and started 7 rounds of clomid. Again, no pregnancies with clomid. Then my hubby was tested and it was discovered that he had a very low sperm count, low motility and borderline morphology. We moved on to a fertility specialist at that point and decided to try IUI since my insurance covered it 100%. After 4 IUI's with no pregnancies again we decided it was finally time to move on to IVF.

Luckily, we have very supportive family who helped us come up with the $15,500 upfront payment otherwise IVF may not have been in our future. We qualified for a refund program and paid for 6 rounds of IVF upfront with the contract stating that if we did not have a baby after all 6 rounds we would get 75% of that initial payment back. Out of the first 5 IVF cycles, I got pregnant on 2 fresh cycles and 1 frozen but miscarried around the 5-6 week mark every time. Knowing we only had 1 shot left and were tapped out financially because we had spend an additional $10,000-$15,000 on meds and other fees, we started researching surrogacy and asked some family and friends if they would be willing to be a surrogate for us without compensation.

However, my doctor and I had a plan that we were going to throw everything possible at this 6th frozen transfer and our final try. We did an endometrial scratch on the cycle before to give the embryos a better place to burrow and I also started a full month of antibiotics to eliminate any infections or inflammation. I also started steroids before the embryo transfer to reduce the chances that my body would reject the embryo as a foreign body, blood thinning injections to reduce clotting, baby aspirin to increase blood flow and also help reduce clotting and doubled my progesterone supplementation to include PIO injections and crinone suppositories. We transferred 2 embryos on October 11th, one hatching and one expanding, I got my first faint positive at 5dp5dt on October 16th and my first beta came back at 165 on 9dp5dt on October 20th! We saw the heartbeat of 1 beautiful baby at 6 weeks and a 2nd sac that only had a yolk sac. Unfortunately the 2nd baby never developed and the sac was absorbed. I continued steroids until I was 9 weeks pregnant and progesterone until I was 14 weeks pregnant. I will continue to take blood thinning injections for my entire pregnancy.

I am currently 17 weeks pregnant and we had our 4th ultrasound today! We found out that we are having a little GIRL! I was so hesitant to write a success story after 3 miscarriages but I finally feel confident that this will be our take home baby! There were so many days when I just wanted to give up and accept that we would not have children but I am so glad that I just kept pushing myself to keep trying! Never give up on your dream ladies!
