Can you test negative at 14 DPO,period is already 1 day late and still be pregnant????

I have been waiting patiently during the 2 week wait which can be quite exciting and overwhelming at the same time. My periods are very regular and I usually get my periods on the day I calculated or 1 or 2 days earlier than the day I calculated. I was expecting my period yesterday and it didn't arrive so I resisted taking a test and wanted to give it one more day.

I tested this morning and I got what looked like a strong negative :-(, but had cramps throughout the night and breast slightly sore. Has anyone ever had this experience?? Should I rule out pregnancy or give it until the end of the week where I will be at 20 DPO and a week late???
