Late Period: If pregnancy is not the reason, what is?

Pregnancy is usually the first thing that comes to mind when your period is delayed. But pregnancy is not the only reason for women to have a late period. Here are some of the common reasons why your period may be tardy:

-Stress
-Illness (colds, flu, etc)
-Hormonal imbalance (ie: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome)
-Changes in Work/Sleep Schedule
-Changes in Medication
-Being Overweight
-Being Underweight
-Peri-Menopause
-Thyroid Disease
-Cycle Length Miscalculation

If you have taken a pregnancy test and it is negative, most home pregnancy tests recommend you wait a week and test again. If the second test is negative and your period still has not arrived then you should see your doctor or midwife for a physical exam to determine the underlying cause.
