HCG, why must you do this to me?

On Monday, I called my infertility doctor because he told me to call if I missed a period or got a positive HPT. Unfortunately, it seems like every nurse that works there either doesn't do their job or is an idiot, because they did not call me back Monday OR after my second call on Tuesday. The nice receptionist who works in the office gave me the direct line on Tuesday, so I called when they STILL hadn't called me by Wednesday afternoon. Conveniently, I got someone to answer the phone. I made an appointment for a blood draw that afternoon. They told me they should have the results back that evening or early the next morning.

When I STILL hadn't received a call by Thursday afternoon, I called the nurse line again. The nurse I spoke to was like "Oh, yeah, I took the call yesterday I remember you." and then found my results and proceeded to have the WORST bedside manner for someone who works in an infertility clinic. "Well, I have your results here and they are really, really low." (Seriously, the cow used TWO reallys. Why could she not have said "They are lower than we'd like at this point.") My result for exactly 4 weeks was a 52. The thing is, though, that everything I can read online gives a HUGE range of "normal" hcg levels for 4 weeks. It's like anywhere from 5-430, basically. I get that my score is low, but it's not impossible that this baby is viable. Anyways, that is not where her amazing people-skills stopped. Oh no! She proceeded to ask me several times if I had any bleeding (I haven't) or any cramping (nope). You would think me telling her once would be enough, but no. It was not. I had to repeat it 3 times. She cancelled my second draw on Friday (even though everywhere else I read says seeing if the number doubles in 48 hours is the most important part) and rescheduled it for Wednesday. In the meantime, I'm sitting here trying to be optimistic. I have been talking to the little one every day, encouraging him/her to grow their little butt off and wow them with extremely high numbers next Wednesday. I have been waiting for too long to lose hope so easily, especially because of some dumbass nurse who doesn't know how to talk to a person like they are human with feelings.

That does not sound very low to me....maybe you are more like 3 and a half weeks, anyways, I think it's still too soon to tell but checking the blood levels next week should hopefully put your mind at ease :) FX!

Every doctor I have had has told me they don't even know if it's low that early until they do another draw and compare to see if it doubled. And from what I've been through, and from what I heard others say their hcg was at first, that doesn't even sound low. I've always been told the numbers aren't that important as long as they're doubling. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what my doctor said.

Exactly what adiggs said, the numbers themselves don't matter much as long as they're going up :) FX for you and your little bean!!

I had similar issues with my LO2. He was my sixth pregnancy, with only one live birth so far at the time. I needed to get in to a specialist to monitor the first few weeks to see if we could figure out why most of my pregnancies only lasted 6/7 weeks. I was making an appt (because I had an urgent referral) and the nurse on the other end actually said "It's office policy to not see patients until after eight weeks. It's sounds like you're just going to miscarry anyway, and we don't want to waste the appointment slots." Yeah: special nurses can be COWS sometimes. Sending you lots of hugs, girl! Don't let a stinky nurse get you down! Your DR is giving you good instructions because he wants to see you succeed. H+H 9 months.

I've also heard that it matters if it doubles and what it does in 48 hours which is why I was confused when she cancelled my Friday appointment. The only thing that made me feel better is my father-in-law, who is a surgeon, says sometimes with tests like that (although he can't be sure because it's not his field and he's not familiar with the test), it can mean a lot more if a level would double from say a 2500 to 5000 than with a 50 to 100, so maybe by giving me extra time it will give them more information. In any case, I know people who have had hcg at over 100 at 4 weeks and unfortunately it didn't stick, and I've known people with 30s that did. So I'm just waiting and trying to be super positive. I still have my symptoms, no cramping or spotting, so things are still good. I am just thankful for everyday that I wake up and I'm still pregnant and hope for another day. Thank you all for your kind words. It really means a lot!
