When to see doctor about possible fertility issues?

I read many times that if you are under 35 you should try for a year before seeing a fertility specialist and if you are over 35 you should see someone after 6 months. I am 30 and have been ttc for about 4 months. My husband is 43. I know that many people say that a man has a longer time to produce a child, but I am wonder if being he is over 35 we should should see a specialist after ttc for 6 months?? Any thoughts?

hi! my dh is 39 this yr and im going to be 35 this yr.i have been ttcing for 15 months now, i went to see my dr after a yr and he just shrugged me off, i asked dh to get tested and that was a huge fight,so i decided bout a week ago that i am taking this into my own hands and have a dr app for monday to be referred to a fertility specialist, and won't take no for an answear. i would give it to a yr as you are only 30 but in the mean time ask dh to get tested as he is a bit older than you.

Hi .... I am 35 and my dh is 40 we have been ttc for 6 months now and we have a fertility appt. next week for both of us. I would say though at 30 most dr. will make you wait longer first. You can certainly try or call a dr. office and ask. You can also buy semen analysis kits at local pharmacies that test the quantity of sperm at home (they don't test for everything but it is a start) We are going to do that first and then bring the results in when we go for our appt. Even at 30 your chances of getting preg. still each month is only 20% so hang in there unless you already have irregular cycles.

Good luck!

I am only 27 and my dh is 31. After 5 months of ttc (we are now 8 months in) my doctor ordered a semen analysis and prescribed bloodwork and medications for me because I had been BBT charting and it showed I had late ovulation and luteal phase defect. She is VERY proactive and I'm glad she is! I guess it just depends who you go to and what kind of "evidence" you have. Good luck!

Thank you both. I think am going to try for two more months and then see. My husband is very healthy, works out 5x/week, doesn't smoke or drink, eats good...so I am not too concerned. He said he would get tested, but I don't want to make him go through that if he doesn't need too. I did a home fertility test for me, and it said I was fetile and my periods are regular. I think I will try the semen analysis kits for him, but in the mean time I have to try to relax. I of course wanted it to happen right away, because of my husband's age but he has more energy then I do so I probably shouldn't worry quite yet. Thanks again.

I will be 30 in a couple months so we are close in age. I am healthy, but my doctor said that, if I am not pregnant within six months of actively ttc, to make an appointment. Under 35, a woman SHOULD be able to coneive within 6 months of trying because we are said to be in our peak of fertility.

I also wanted to add, with dh's age, it may not hurt to get his sperm count and motility tested if you have not conceived within 6 months. Remember, it take two to make a baby and that means fertility problems can be an issue with the man 50% of the time.
