Low Motility :-(

I just received my DH's semen analysis and was told that everything was within normal range except for his motility. It was 31%, grade 2. I'm not sure what this means? I assume it's bad. I'll be 39 in 2 wks and he's 41. My OB/GYN ordered the analysis, she gave me the results and a phone number to a urologist/fertility specialist and said this was not her area of expertise. I'm worried that my Dr. mentioned a fertility specialist. Should I be so worried? Have any of you ladies conceived naturally with a low motility of 31%? Is 31% considered a terrible number? Please help me with your experiences. Thank you!

It's not terribly bad, 40% is the lower end of normal... but it could take some time and if time is not on your side I would definately look into possible IUI.... if numbers and morphology are good, an IUI would definately be a good option to consider. My hubby has 25% motility, and 3% morphology. We are trying to change his motility with diet and vitamins. Vitamin c, zinc, selenium, cq10, l-carnitine, and omega 3's have been know to increase motility. There is also a vitamin out there called motility boost. However they say it takes 3 months to see results.

Thank you for your response and your tips on diet and vitamins. I did start him on a multivitamin about a month ago. I'll do some research on what he actually needs to be getting and how much. I also need to do some research on IUI. I really don't know a lot about it. I'm assuming it is what it sounds like. I just need to see if that is offered in my tiny town or where we would need to go to get that done. Thank you again for your response. This ttc journey is sometimes a confusing, lonely ride.

Cheri that's actually not that bad at all. I know co q 10, vitamin c and zinc helps. Vitamin c also helps so that sperm doesn't clump together. My sister's husband had super low results and she got her bfp last week and that's what she used for him. Also here is a link about red Korean ginseng tea that helps with motility, sperm count, testosterone, sex drive and everything else you can think of that enhances male fertility. If you decide to get it (and it is really expensive for tea) get the KGC brand in the extract tea form.

Oh and btw she was giving him 1000mg vit c, 100mg zinc, 200 CoQ10. As for the ginseng 2-3 cups a day mixed with regular tea (not very tasty on it's own)

Thank you for the info. Your message made me feel a bit better. My OB/GYN told me that she thought 50% was the low end of normal and my DH was 31% so she thought I need to contact an expert. But she did tell me that it was not her area of expertise, which I can understand. Thank you again! :-)

Hi,
I have read on here about major improvement when men have a lifestyle change. Stress relief, regular low impact exercise, change of diet, no (or very little) caffeine and alcohol can all make a difference. Realistically it's hard so we do what we can and supplement what we can't. Have a look here we have a post especially on men's supplements and what they are useful for:

Are you using preseed? Might be worth it to give sperm an easier journey, every little helps. Also be sure to have sex (or get him to get jiggy) twice a week before ovulation, apparently it clears the tubes and makes sure the sperm are at their healthiest.
I'm sure you will get your bfp soon, good luck xx

Thank you! :-) He is overall a pretty healthy guy. Doesn't drink and is not overweight. He does work a lot and there really isn't much we can do about that. He is a Mechanical Engineer managing a team of 20 men and women, so he is very busy. I try and make home as happy and relaxing as possible. We are using preseed. This will be the third month using it.

Ughh....we just got the full results in the mail and it's no wonder my OB/GYN referred us not only is his motility at 31% but his morphology number is 1.5. Everything I am reading says with a morphology number that low we will not conceive without IUI or IVF. My husband says we won't be doing IVF and doesn't know about IUI. I'm so heartbroken right now....are we really doomed to conceive naturally??
