Hi there. I had my HSG done in April and it was ordered by a fertility specialist. I'm sure you could ask your regular doctor but your insurance may not cover the cost, so you will want to check on that first. My experience was that it was not too painful. It was similar for me to an IUD insertion (if you've ever had one of those). I have heard that there is more pain and cramping if your tubes are blocked (mine were open). It was uncomfortable but only lasted for a few seconds. I took 800 mg of ibuprofen about an hour before the procedure. I do not know if it made me more fertile or not. We have been struggling for almost a year (had one miscarriage in March right before the HSG) and just last week i got another BFP. So the HSG might have helped, but it wasn't instantaneous or anything like that for me. Good luck!

I had my HSG in November of 2016. My obgyn ordered it after I got a PCOS diagnosis. Dr. Put me on bc pills after just to make sure fave time for dye to get out of system. I didn't think it was painful, just a little uncomfortable. Take some Advil or Tylenol before hand and that should help. Also bring a pad... they had some there but we're uncomfortable. My tubes were clear...we got to find out right away with the Dr that performed it.

We got our bfp early January 2017.
