Odd spotting

I have PCOS and was just put back on Metformin in June after not being treated for it for over two years. I have had odd spotting in July that lasted 2 1/2 weeks, August that lasted 6 days (Aug 17 to Aug 22) and it now started again only two weeks after the last time ended.

The reason I say this is odd is because I do not have any cramping, clots, or heavy flow. My periods always have been this way. This is more of the darker older blood, with no cramping, or heavy flow. I wear a pad or tampon though just to not get it on my clothes. My husband and I have been sexually active and are trying to conceive our third child but I have yet to have a real flat out positive. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what this may be or whether it may be an actual concern for my doctor?
