They could be..but they could also be gas cramps. If you've been constipated, pressure will accumulate in your lower abdomen and could potentially cause the backaches. Backaches can be caused from a number of things, which is so disheartening to hear sometimes... i know. I would test in 3 days and see what you get. If it's a BFN, don't lose hope.. and if AF doesn't come, try again in another 3 days. BEST OF LUCK! - lotsa baby dust :)

Unfortunately, nature is pretty cruel. Lots of everyday symptoms can also be preg or AF symptoms. It's a pretty mean joke if you ask me. However: My first symptoms were horrible backaches, bad headaches and awful gas and constipation. Though symptoms are different for everyone.
