Question

Will I eventually adjust to Metformin?

INeed some advice about Metformin. I just started my third week on metformin. I started the first week with 1 500mg dose. Did fine. Last week 2 doses and a little stomach upset. Now taking the full 3 doeses I'm miserable. It's been 2 days and I'm constantly nauseated, headache, and the runs. I've thrown up once. I'm being very careful to time the doses with meals. Will these symptoms disappear or should I be concerned? I don't want to give up on the first treatment I'm getting.

Deepends I was on them I unfortunately did not get use to them and I had to stop but for some people they do work I would stay on them for another week if you don't have any changes I'd go back to docs and tell him/her your symptoms.

I never got used to it and tried 3 different times with generic, brand name and extended release versions. I also cut the pills in half to start lower and increase slower which you could try (can't do this with extended release though). They all did the same thing to me...horrible digestive symptoms to the point I had to call in to work because I couldn't make the drive without pooping my pants. I already had ibs and a sensitive system before trying metformin so I think that was a major factor as to why I could never adjust. I did have the best luck with the brand name "glumetza" version. I stuck with it the longest and the runs were more manageable but I was still miserable and had to stick to a very short list of foods.

Thanks for the input. Think I'm going to cut it back to a dose I'm not sick on until my next appointment. So did either of you put on something different or ever have any luck getting pregnant?

I've been on it since nov haven't had any real side effects. It does get annoying having to rush to the bathroom but nothing to bad I've lost a few pounds from it . I'm hoping this is my normal cycle I ovulated on cd 15 and usually get my periods 15/16 days after ovulation .

I did lose weight on it and had more regular cycles but I didn't feel the benefits were worth being that miserable and sick all the time. After being diagnosed with pcos and trying metformin and clomid I found out dh also had a very low count and we eventually got pregnant through ivf and have an 18 month old daughter now.

I unfortunately never got used to it. However my mother did. It took her 6 weeks of side effects but she did it. So I guess it is possible if you hang on.
