When do you count starting your period?

My period was due Tuesday. I started spotting today (3 days early) and it keeps getting heavier, still very light, then I checked now and it's stopped. Having af cramps and backache. Started brown and not slightly turning red. I know I'm not pregnant, just want to know when to stay my next cycle. Is it when spotting starts? Or when heavy flow starts?
