spotting for 2 weeks

I started spotting 3 days before my expected period. Not a big deal, that happens fairly often. But it continued for 2 weeks. Some times almost heavy enough for a pad and sometimes just staining. Always brown and goopy. A more normal period finally started this past Friday. Two days of light bleeding, with actual red blood, and then a day of gushing and now back to light bleeding. There's been quite a few clots, which is not normal for me. Also no breast pain and very light cramps. Also not normal. I usually have fairly significant breast pain and pretty bad cramping. Should I be concerned? I am under a lot of stress. Waiting to find out if we have been chosen as the adoptive parents for a little girl. TTC for almost 8 years. No known pregnancies. I did test after a week of spotting and it was negative.
