Question

Femara vs clomid?

Ok so I'm anticipating my Gyno appointment on Thursday so I've been doing some research and now can across "fermara?" Which is supposed to be doing the same as clomid but is less harmful?
Anyone have any experience with either? Would appreciate some input! Thank ladies

I have been on both, and also tamoxifen. I would never, ever recommend Clomid unless you are certain (confirmed with ultrasound) that you have a very thick uterine lining. It made my lining so thin I could never have implanted. That being said, Clomid had a greater effect on my ovaries/follicle production and I usually released two eggs a month on it, while with Femara I only had one egg per month (which was fine with me because I had no interest in twins). Your mileage may vary, of course. I ended up getting pregnant when I switched to tamoxifen because it actually thickens the uterine lining (Femara has no effect, and Clomid thins the lining). GL!

Clomid is usually tried before a doc will try femera. Most docs won't even give femera because it's an off label use still. Clomid can thin lining but usually only after prolonged use or high doses. I've done 9 clomid cycles over the last 2 1/2 years and haven't gotten pregnant. My doc won't do femera. How long have u been ttc? Is this ur first visit to the gyno for fertility? Be prepared not to get anything right away as most will want to do a baseline hormone panel on cd 3 and a progesterone draw on 7 dpo to see if ur ovulating on ur own. So depending on where u are in ur cycle, it could be a month or two before u get a prescription.

burgbrandy I agree that most docs try Clomid first, but I was on the lowest dosage of Clomid and only did 4 cycles and my lining was 4.5 mm, which is way too thin. So it's not just high doses or prolonged use that can thin the lining :)

I'd consider 4 cycles in a row prolonged use. Exactly why I don't do more than 3 cycles back to back. What works for one woman may not work for another or vice versa.
Fanny - I just read ur profile and saw u have pcos. Ur gyno will definitely want to do more tests to confirm that and will also want u back on the metformin. Make sure u ask him to test hubs too.

Uh, yeah, I get that. She asked for comparisons of the drugs and I have been on both so I gave *my* experience with both. Sorry if you find it unhelpful.

Ha! I gave MY experience and u argued that I was wrong. I even said "usually" and ur 4 cycles falls perfectly in my description of prolonged use. So thank u for proving my point. :) u should have also told franny (who's probably annoyed with someone being petty and arguing over another's experience) that ur femera and tamoxifen was prescribed by a RE and it's not something commonly given by a gyno.

Lol! Too funny!

Ok, heads up! Ur in Canada, u probably wont get femara from a gyno...esp not on the first visit. U'll have blood tests done first, then more than likely a HSG/SSG combo, hubs will have a SA if all checks out with u, THEN he/she will try clomid. If it doesnt work in a cycle or two, he may up the dose to 100 and go from there. U'll most likely be sent to a RE before getting femara tho, IF u get it at all. Canada healthcare is very different from the US. We dont work on cash/credit, so u dont dictate what u want the doctor will give u. U can ask about stuff, but dont expect a pen and pad to come out. Its very take it or leave it...not too bad when u dont pay out of pocket tho! ;D

I did 5 cycles of clomid, the first 2 were 100mg and last 3 were 150mg. My lining didnt start to take a hit til the 3rd round. Lining issues are correctable with estrogen. Cycle 5 was my winner. I love clomid, and will definitely take it again!!
Good luck at the gyno!

Okay, lady. My Femara was prescribed by my gyno, actually. You were the first one to argue with me about my experience on Clomid. You know nothing about me and you could have just given your own tongue-bathing opinion on Clomid without discrediting me, but you didn't. I leave you to your Clomid love now, but since it didn't work for you in nine cycles I don't know why you are being so nasty to me about defending it.

Please explain how I discredited u?? I simply stated facts about clomid and my own experience with it. Good job changing to "member" luv. It doesn't take a genius to read ur profile to see u were on 5 cycles of clomid when u found out about the thin lining and that u then went to a RE. I was never nasty to u when I explained that clomid is almost always tried first. U could have simply read my experience and let it go but u felt the need to reply and attempt to prove me wrong.

What's this ugly bickering and giving negative votes to one another all about?! I hate seeing such dialog on this site. Sorry this is not an answer to your question, an observation only. GL with whatever you choose. Honestly, after having done my own research I'd go with Femara. See if your dr will prescribe it at some point. GL!!!
