Question

Confused?

So, I had an external and internal ultrasound on the 11th because my periods are very irregular and so far, this is the results:

2.2 cm dominant follicle of the right ovary. No abnormal solid or cystic ovarian lesion. Uterus is normal in appearance.

So, I'm pretty reasonable this is good news overall and I go in tomorrow for another appointment to see what to do or whatever to regulate my periods. I was very clear in not wanting birth control because of a past experience. Anyway, what I am confused about is the follicle thing? I know it has to do with releasing the egg and stuff, but can anyone explain it better to me and how it correlates with ovulation? Like, based on that, would I be able to kind of pinpoint when abouts I possibly ovulated if at all?

Follicles are the structures that contain eggs. Not every follicle contains an egg. Follicles are called mature at 18mm or larger with an estrogen level of around 200 or more. You seem to have a mature follicle size wise, obviously, the estrogen level is the other part of the equation since both go hand in hand. Follicles can grow larger than what you have right now. They usually keep growing until the LH starts surging (detectable with OPk) . The LH surge happens about 24-36 hours before the egg is released from the follicle (ovulation). The days leading up to ovulation and the entire ovulation time frame is your fertile window. I hope this helps. Best wishes and the Lord's blessings.

A follicle, without meds, will usually rupture when it reaches 18-24mm and release the egg. That's when the egg is mature enough to be fertilised. A follicle will grow in average 1-3mm a day. If the follicle fails to release the egg, that follicle will turn into a cyst which can cause irregular cycles. If your follicle released the egg, you were in your fertile period on the day of the u/s. It is very hard to predict when the egg was released, it could have been released that day or the next and possibly the day after that (with a growth of 1mm per day to reach the max of 24mm). however; it's possible that it was not released, your doctor would need to do a progesterone blood test to confirm whether or not you ovulated.

Good luck :)

Thanks, ladies! Thankfully the fiance has been very adamant about DTD this month and did it several times around that time. So, maybe there is some hope if it decided to release an egg. :) according to a few apps I have, I should be due for AF in a few days. Hopefully. My periods seem to be trying to regulate the last few months, but something usually throws it off.

Anywho, you two were very helpful! :3
