My dr prescribes progesterone supplements to high risk patients once a positive pregnancy test is obtained. He will prescribe it after ovulation to women with a luteal phase of less than 10 days. Miscarriages happen frequently for various reasons - most often because of chromosomal abnormalities. In those cases progesterone supplements will not be able to keep the pregnancy going. Talk to your dr and see if he thinks that the miscarriages were possibly caused by low progesterone and/or a short luteal phase and request supplements if he thinks this is the case. Best wishes and the Lord's blessings.

Progesterone supplements are really only prescribed if your Progesterone levels aren't where they're supposed to be while pregnant. Firstly, you should ask for them to test your Progesterone level if you think it may be a problem. If it's too low, it can cause a miscarriage, but if you get on supplements, that can save the pregnancy.
Like essemkay said, it won't keep your cervix closed, but it helps maintain a healthy lining, which could have been your problem the first time.
Good luck!
