Ovulation pain? When?

When is it 'normal' to experience ovulation pain? Ovulation day? Can it occur after ovulation day as an after pain? Confused. I either ovulated on the 7th or 9th. it would have been the 9th if based off of my previous 30 day cycle, but according to a 'typical' 28 day cycle it would have been the 7th. Anyway, I had pain on my left side in the ovary area on the 9th...can anyone give some insight? I did not opk this cycle.
