Question

Anyone who has done IUI, can you answer some questions?

So after celebrating our 2 year anniversary of trying for baby #2, my husband and I have decided to do IUI within the next couple months. The thing is, while ovulation used to be our problem, after a miscarriage last November, it no longer is. That being said, 9 months later and the doctor still cannot find any reason why we're having difficulty and have not conceived again. So our next step is IUI at the fertility clinic. My questions range from what is the procedure to what were you're experience to how much does it cost? Any information you can give me would be helpful. We have an appointment with the specialist in September, so I just want to get as may questions answered before we meet him. We live in Utah, so that might help you answer. Thanks in advance

Leading up to the IUI they usually take blood samples to make sure that you are heading towards ovulation, then when you have an estrogen surge they will give you a scan to see your follicles. IUI is pretty basic. They put a tube through your cervix into the uterus and then put the washed sperm in (normally your husband gives the sample on the day). Then 7 days later they give you a blood test to make sure that you progesterone levels are correct for a woman that has ovulated. Then 7 or more days later another blood test to see if you are pregnant. I've only had 1 IUI it didn't work for me, my close friend got pregnant on her 2nd round of IUI. :)

For us, costs for IUI back-to-back (meaning 2 inseminations) are $ 840. Then add $125 for sperm preparation which makes $250 for the 2 inseminations. We have done 3 IUIs so far and have not been successful.

The only IUI that worked for us was one that we used in conjunction with injectable medications. Our pregnancy ended in a late miscarriage, but I honestly think injectables are the only drugs that gave us a shot at being pregnant. Our clinic isn't a fan of IUI + injectables (they think it's too risky for such a small improvement in success rate), but our insurance would only let us move on to IVF if we did 3 rounds of IUI + injectables. IUI does work for some people, but I honestly see more success stories for IVF.

We just had our 5th IUI this past weekend, so I should be able to answer a lot of questions about this! My typical IUI cycle started out with a clearing ultrasound on CD3 to make sure I didn't have any cysts or anything strange going on. I did 3 IUI's with Clomid only, and the last 2 they added injectables to my regimen. Every doctor has a slightly different protocol, but you'll probably start meds anywhere from CD3 to CD5. Then you'll have a few ultrasounds along the way before ovulation to check on the size of your follicles, which will give the doctor an idea of when to do the procedure. We also used a trigger shot, so once the doctor felt my follicles were at a proper size I would trigger at 10:00 pm, then have my IUI 36 hours later. A typical IUI with Clomid only costs around $1,200 (hopefully your insurance would cover some), and when you add injectables you're adding an additional $500-$1,000. http://infertilitywhyme.wordpress.com
