A chemical pregnancy is actually a very early miscarriage, which takes place before anything can be seen on an ultrasound scan â?? usually around the fifth week that you are pregnant. It means that a sperm has fertilised your egg, but later on, the egg fails to survive.

â??Even this early on in pregnancy there is a change in hormone levels which allows the pregnancy test to turn positive.

â??In a chemical pregnancy, or very early miscarriage, the test is initially positive but then your period may start, or a further pregnancy test is negative.

â??The reason it is termed a chemical pregnancy is that it is only the missed period and positive pregnancy test that show that you are pregnant. It would be too early to see anything on an ultrasound scan.â??

Thank you. iam just wondering if the bleeding is heavy enough for a chemical pregnancy. It is so light i only see the blood every time i go to the toilet and at some times there is no blood at all.

I guess I am clutching at straws but my friend had bleeding after a super faint positive and is now 6 weeks from giving birth. I also had this type of bleeding when I was pregnant a few years ago and assumed it was my period then a few weeks later tested positive on a HPT at 9 weeks. The line was deffinately there as I showed my husband and he is always truthful when there isn't a line or is. I guess I have to wait and see what the test says today.

Hi Hun, I am in the same situation as you right now, basically I had what I thought was a normal flow period. But got a positive hpt a week later...... Saw my gp who told me that it was likely a chemical pregnancy and the hpt is still showing positive due to hormone still being in my system. Sure enough over the next week my hpt became fainter untill it eventually showed a definite negative. BUT ...... I tested again yesterday because I've been unwell and got the darkest pos hpt this cycle so far so now lm completely confused! Thank you rachaelbella . I too am bleeding like a light flow period so light that I am use one tampon per day ( 8 hours max) and as the day ends I don't need to use anything. Sometimes there is barely anything when I wipe.
I took a hpt a few days ago which was faintly positive so I waited a few more days and now it is a definate negative.
I am so confused too as I feel exhausted and even had a a nap a couple of times this week which is unlike me. I also had a light period last time I was pregnant 6 years ago. Didn't think anything of it and then a few weeks later I thought 'I'm pregnant' Sure enough the test was blazing positive. saw dr later and sure enough I was 9 weeks pregnant had scan it was twins!! Unfortunately I lost them at 11 and 13 weeks.

I've not become pregnant since due to various reasons.
