One very positive test and the next day a negative (though seems to be faulty). Any thoughts??

I took a test yesterday with FMU and it came back positive within 2 minutes. Even showed the pharmacist and she said yes!!
Took another of the same brand (different pack) this morning and there were strange horizontal lines running across the test...almost to the point that I thought they threw a +/- one in the box. The horizontal line did fade, but it ran into the control line and caused the control to be white in certain areas. In any case, that test showed negative. Unless it was faulty.
I am not due for my period until Thursday and as I said, yesterday's test showed positive straight away. These were both early result tests.
Any suggestions as to what might be going on?? I do have 3 kids so I'm used to taking tests. I normally trust the ones that come turn up positive right away or within 2 mins!!
