From intercourse to conception
Read this somewhere, and decided to share-
"Your very practical question about the time between sexual intercourse and fertilization must be answered with a couple of items of information, both related to the viability of gametes (ova and sperm) in the pelvis. First, consider that fertilization, or conception is believed to occur in the outer part (ampulla) of a fallopian tube. An oocyte is collected by the tubal fimbria from the pelvic cavity after ovulation, and is transported by ciliary and muscular action into the ampulla. The fertilizing sperm may reside in the fallopian tube, in the pelvic cavity and accompany the oocyte into the tube, or the sperm may be newly introduced into the reproductive tract after the oocyte arrives in the tube. Practically, that means that today's fertilization, immediately after an ovulation, can result from yesterday's (or earlier) sexual intercourse, since the viability of sperm is more than 24 hours, probably more than 48, or even up to 72 hour

...Sperm travel through the cervix, uterus, and fallopian tubes within ten minutes after they are deposited at the top of the vagina, but they require a short time (a few hours) in the environment of the fallopian tube in preparation for fertilization (see below). Or since the oocyte is viable for about 24 hours, too, sexual intercourse may result in an "immediate" fertilization, but only if ovulation had occurred in the preceeding 24 hours. Actually, the sperm undergo a couple of preparative steps, capacitation and acrosome activation, in the tube before beginning the fertilization process. Oocytes are in a haploid state (meaning their chromosomes have been divided into two groups of 24 each, one set in the 1st polar body) at the time of ovulation, so they are prepared for fertilization. This preparation results from the stimulus of luteinizing hormone (LH) before ovulation, and LH is also responsible for the ovulation process. ...

...The time required for a capacitated sperm to dissolve a path through the granulosa cells (cumulus oophorus) and the zona pellicuda, and penetrate into the oocyte is about 4-6 hours, and the time to the 1st cell division into two blastomeres of the new embryo is about 20 hours. So, taking these variables into account, the shortest time from coitus to fertilization is 4-6 hours, and the longest is 48-72 hours. Therefor, the time of ovulation, not coitus, is the key factor for the timing of fertilization, and the time of sexual intercourse is a secondary factor in the fertilization sequence.
