Question

Recently told I have a Polycystic Right Ovary, where do I go from here?

Hi, I'm 26 & live in the UK. I have had irregular periods for a gd few months now, with no explanation, or so I thought! I had a scan in May this year & was told by my previous Gp that the results were normal. I had some issues with this Gp so I changed surgerys. Only 5 long months later, I find out from my new Gp that the scan showed a Polycystic Right Ovary, Left Ovary normal & so was my endometrium. She showed me the computer so I could see for myself. I'm still in major shock as I wasn't informed this all in May & now feel so hopeless. We have been trying for baby #4, (our last), since Jan 2013 & nothing. At least I now know why. I have been charting & it seems I ovulate one month but not the next. Its like a pattern. Cycles are 35 days, then 20 days then 34 days & then 14 days. I've tried opks before & they never get to a positive or even surge. I want to ask where do I go from here? Do I need more tests & what types? Will I ever get pregnant? P

Seriously don't panic having PCOS doesn't mean I baby won't happen - their are loads of mommas out there who have babies with PCOS - Victoria Beckham as an example. It basically means that in your right ovary when the follicle matures to release the egg the egg doesn't go and in those months the follicle can turn into a cyst.

Typical symptoms of PCOS are irregular periods (PCOS causes higher than normal levels of male hormones) and fertility issues because as you have discovered some months you don't ovulate. There is also increased risk of diabetes (Type 2) and high cholesterol. If you have strong symptoms like weight gain, excessive hair growth on face and chest and regularly miss O your doctor can put you on mediation to address the hormone imbalance. Weight loss is known to improve things but very hard with PCOS and you will have to go onto a special diet. If you are having fairly mild symptoms natural remedies such as evening primrose and vitex angus castus can help.

But seriously don't panic you only have one ovary affected and while it may take longer to conceive there is no reason why you wouldn't especially if this is baby #4.

If things don't improve may be worth asking the doctor about clomid which can help with the irregular periods and ovulation. Most important thing to do is try and relax and not to stress too much.

And after the magic happens you can go onto birth control which will really help with the symptoms. Lots of luck and baby dust xx

Thank you so much for your advice! I feel a little calmer now :) Wow I had no idea Victoria Beckham has it, you learn something new everyday lol. I don't have the excess hair growth, but do have a little more acne than normal and weight gain. I have recently lost 7lbs but it won't budge no further. I have an app with my gp on Thursday afternoon, so will ask more then. Thank you so much, I knew I wasn't alone out there. I'm just furious my old gp didn't tell me, it could of been treated one way or another. I really do appreciate the advice thou, thank you :)

Yes, PCOS doesn't mean you can't conceive, it just means that you'll need to work a little harder as you won't have 12 regular opportunities a year like everyone else.

I'm currently TTC #3. I got pregnant with DS1 straight away with no problems. I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2010 when TTC #2. I was lucky enough to get pregnant on my first round of 50mg clomid & have DS2.

I've been off BC since having DS2 in Jan 2012. We've tried 2 rounds of clomid & no BFP yet. I recently started taking Vitex Agnus Castus and for the first time in years, I O'd by myself this month! I'm 3DPO and keeping my fingers crossed for my BFP.

In short, my advice to you would be;
- chart your bbt (I use the fertility friend website, it's great)
- keep testing even after you get a + OPK, as PCOS patients have a higher LH level than normal and you can get false positives. Test a few times a day until your BBT goes up
- try Vitex, it may help regulate your cycle.
-- try not to stress.
