Question

Please help, Partners sperm count came back 0.2 ml, what do i do?

Doctor rang us today and said it wasn't good and that his sperm count was 0.2 ml and they couldn't even do the other tests cause there wasn't enough sperm. I'm so upset do we have no chance of having a baby now? What are our options? No doctors appointment for 2 weeks and full of worry, upset and questions.

We're from the UK, I'm 22 nearly 23 no fertility problems, very healthy, My partner is 31, healthy weight doesn't smoke, drink do drugs etc he's been taking Wellman conception supplements and astragalus. We were trying for 7 months before we got the results.

Please if anyone could help us with any advice or knowledge i can't tell you how much it'd mean right now

My DH only has 2 sperm. Severe male factor infertility at its finest. We went and spoke with an IVF specialist and there are definitely options for getting pregnant, they will just cost a lot of money. Eventually we decided to go the route of frozen donor sperm IUIs. We are now 15 and a half weeks pregnant with identical twins. For us, our three options we had to discuss were;

- pay the $30k for IVF
- use donor sperm
- don't have a baby.

My DH has low count, motility, morphology, etc. His first analysis was only 0.6 mL but his second sample was 1.5 mL. So there is hope that if you wait for awhile and try again for a sample it will be better. Although my husband's volume was better not much else had changed. We meant with a fertility clinic yesterday to discuss our options. It is so costly. We live in the states.

IUI - we were given a 17% chance with a cycle - about $2,500
IVF - about $30,000 for a 70% chance
Miracle - doesn't cost anything but may never come

I wish I could give you medical advice but I can't. I can only say I totally understand how you and your partner are feeling. You just have to keep trying for a better sample and hang on to hope and investigate your options.

Thank you both very much for your reply! It's a bit of a relief to know it's not completely hopeless, i will just have to hope his next sample is better but by how much is even possible like you said i don't know :/ Donor sperm for us personally isn't an option but the fact that IVF may be possible brings me some hope, in the UK i think you have one or three goes on the NHS after a certain amount of years trying but my knowledge of the rules and regulations are little to none...
Thank you for your understanding it was such a shock but we will definitely try to find a way naturally or not...
Congratulations to you shauna2710 :)

Hi panbird. There is a member in here going through ivf in the uk so you could probably pm her with any questions of cost. Her name is tashataylor and she's completely lovely.
If you did decide to go the ivf route and were wanting to use your dh's sperm they can do a procedure called icsi which means they inject the sperm into the egg which works well for low morphology/count sperm. I'm undergoing ivf in Australia so I'm not much help however I am 21 next week so if you want someone your age to chat to about it feel free! Good luck xx

Hi! Thank you so much, I'll try and look her up if i can :) I don't know how much my other halfs sperm count can realistically go up from 0.2 but from what I've read of other peoples similar stories, not much :( So ivf/icsi will probably be our best option, but it is such a huge relief there is still a chance! That's very sweet thank you, i'll remember that :) Good luck to you too xx

Wish i could answer your question, I'm doing IVF and we just found out my DH has 0 sperm. I know how hard it is for you both. The only way for me to get pregnant is with donor sperm. I'll be getting my FET August 2013 with a donor .... Wishing you the best

Hi Andrea, I'm so sorry to hear that, it's very hard news to process and come to terms with. I've done so much reading on extremely low to no sperm and even in some cases with 0 sperm there's a possibility they can still extract some via certain procedures if there's any present, so there's always hope and options for everyone. Wishing you all the best too and lots of luck
