Question

Can toxoplasmosis be caught only from cat faeces?

Hi guys, I'm in a bit of a pickle. I'm nearly 6 weeks pregnany (yay!) after TTC for 2 years. We have a cat and I'm aware of toxoplasmosis. Good thing is, my cat poops outside in this foresty area that's not even on our property, so I don't have to worry about litter boxes etc.

Since I found out I'm preg I haven't even been touching him, much as it kills me cause I love him. He just goes to my husband for love and pats, lol.

Anyways the problem I have is - we have these good friends and we regularly go to their house for dinner and stuff. They are not the most hygienic people to start with.......but my real issue is they have this 5 month old kitten who they let walk all over the counter tops and kitchen table and stuff! I think this is disgusting personally.......but can I catch toxo from their cat being in contact with our dinner dishes and things like that? I know if I say something to them they will get all defensive and stuff so I don't know what to do :-(

I was extremely paranoid about this when I first got pregnant until I talked to my vet.d she told me that cats usually only catch this once in their lifetime. Once they get it they build immunity to it.it only stays in their feces got trio Weeks after they are exposed. You can't catch it from petting them it is only on the feces. If you have had cats most your life more then likely you have already caught it and you have also built immunity to it. I still wouldn't change litter just to be safe. also if you are still scared you can't catch through skin you actoovually have to ingest it. So wash hands throughly after touching cat. But my Dr said its actually very rare for ple to catch from cats. all mammals can catch it cats are the only ones that release it in feces. You are more then likely to catch it from under cooked meat then your cat.

Hope it makes you feel less scared of your cat. I felt much better when I found out the facts.

My BBF's sister lost her baby at 34 weeks to toxoplasmosis. They had their cat sleeping in their bed and the litter box was in their bathroom.
