How early should I take the pregnancy test?

I had IUI 24th April and was given a pregnancy test to take 10th May - a full 16 days later - I am now 2DPO and I can't think of anything else! Obviously...

The site says I could take a pregnancy test 6-12 DPO, would it be awful if I took the test at 12 DPO instead of 16 DPO? Would four days early make a terrible person? Then, what if it's negative and I have to wait until 16 DPO before the possibility of a positive?

Oh, the pressure! *back of hand dramatically against forehead*
