Don't quote me on this, but I believe that implantation occurs between 6-12 days past ovulation. A blood test will only show HCG once implantation has occurred, so you could possible get a false negative it you were tested too soon. My Dr schedules blood tests for 14-16 days past ovulation, with a second blood test 48 hours later to confirm that the HCG rates are rising fast enough.
