Planning Phase...

I just turned 40 a couple weeks ago, dh turned 43 yesterday, we have 4 kids ages 16, 9, 4, and 1....and somehow we both have baby fever despite all these facts haha. We’re also trying to recover from a very difficult financial blow and already bursting at the seams of our house with the people already living here. I feel insane and irresponsible, but we’re think of ttc after the new year (possibly closer into spring). I know at my age that every month counts, so I feel that pressure. My cycle has been cuckoo ever since it returned after my youngest was born, so I’m nervous about that. We kept our last pregnancy mostly secret. I was well into my second trimester before most of our family knew. She was a week old before we even said anything on social media. Friends still talk about the best kept secret of 2018 lol. Due to our ages and how many kids we have already, folks around here definitely like to talk and that gets in my head. Our first two were planned to the tee, but our last two were glorious surprises. I contemplated having my tubes tied with my last, but just couldn’t close the door. I know everyone thought I was crazy. I certainly never dreamed at 25 that I’d have babies on my radar at 40, but this is the unexpected path of life, nonetheless. I’m certainly thankful for the family I have and hopeful that my body is still willing and able to keep going. At best, I’ll be 41 with 17, 10, 5, and 2 year olds if I am blessed to become pregnant again right away and carry to term. Definitely not the way I thought my life would look way back when my husband and I got married 22 years ago.

Good for you! I say if you can and you want to, go for it. I'm pregnant again at 45 (a surprise) after trying really hard to get my rainbow who's turning 2 soon. My husband and I have a blended family together, so altogether we have 24, 20, 18, 16, 10, 2 and one on the way. I grew up in a big family and I love them. The youngest two are ours together after getting married about 6 yrs ago - I only had my 24 yr old and had baby fever bad. We lost our first one at birth (our sweet Oscar), and had another after 4 yrs of infertility. This last one (I"m 15 wks) is a surprise, and I'll have to say, it's the hardest one. Having a baby well into your 40s is tough physically. Prep your body for it as much as you can. Good luck!

I say go for it! I have 6 children earth-side. My kids are 15 (16 in Dec), 13 (14 in December), 12, 9, 7, and 6. I am 37 and hubby is 41. We both want another and as things are right now, I am 15 DPO and scared to test because I am afraid of another negative, I haven't tested since 11dpo. Then I remembered I barely got a faint positive with my youngest at 13dpo. Might buy a test today to take in the am! My grandmother had her 7th and 8th babies up in her 40s! I just feel like there is someone missing. I wish you good luck and baby dust!

Thank y’all for sharing your experiences! It is definitely inspiring and makes me feel better. Back in the day, it was commonplace for women to continue having babies right up until menopause, but there is now a huge stigma around being even in your 30’s and pregnant. Three of my four were born in my 30’s.

Calvingirl, I know exactly what you mean about the extra toll pregnancy takes when you’re older. I’ve vowed to improve my health and fitness level before ttc because I know I’ll regret it if not. My most difficult pregnancy was actually my third, but that had a lot to do with the fact that she was (and is) small and burrowed lower into my pelvis causing bladder infections and kidney stones. I remember the first time I peed after she was out and it had been months since I’d fully emptied my bladder. She was so difficult to carry. At any rate, the plan for ttc right now is spring and I’d love to lose 30 lbs by then, as well as be in the habit of daily exercise.

Update: We basically decided to clear having another baby from our radar and move onto our next chapter. Logistics of adding one more just made my head spin in figuring out how to make it work. Some days I felt good about our choice. Other days, it felt depressing. At any rate, despite our plans and decisions, AF didn’t show last week. We were snowed in, so I wasn’t going to bring it up and planned on sitting tight until I could get to the store, but then dh mentioned that he had no choice but to go get some dog food and I just blurted, “Hey, I didn’t start my period yesterday when I should have.” So, after the blood returned to his face, he made a Dollar General run. We ate dinner and watched a little Call the Midwife. I popped into the bathroom to take the test, 100% expecting it to be negative and my issues being related to endometriosis. I watched the strip as it saturated and saw that line coming up before it even reached the control line. I started shaking, heart thumping, hard to breathe, told myself it would fade. Definitely didn’t fade. haha It’s the first time I ever have missed a period before I suspected I was pregnant, so I’ve always had squinters as my first bfp. Tomorrow makes a week since we found out and we’re still processing it.
