Question

Hormone Profile Test

I have now missed two periods- I have a 25 day cycle and have missed the 1st one and am now a day late for the second. Have had negative blood and urine pregnancy tests. Doctor has now ordered a full hormone profile to be done. Has anyone had this or know what type of things she could be looking for?

I'm sorry you are having issues. I understand completely! I have been having delayed ovulation the last two cycles and previous cycles were fairly normal before that. I had a chemical last month so after i got my period my doctor did some blood work. She tested me on cycle day 7 for FSH and LH which are the pre-ovulation hormones. I have read that normally they would test on CD3. They look to make sure they are close to a 1:1 ratio and if LH is significantly higher it may be an indication of PCOS. If FSH is significantly higher than normal it is an indicator of decrease ovarian reserve. After ovulation, they would test you for progesterone (i think this is supposed to be done on CD19 and after you have confirmed ovulation by temp rise) -- but not knowing where you are in your cycle I'm not sure what they would do except maybe get a baseline of where you are today and then continue to draw blood over time to see how your hormones are behaving throughout your cycle. Are you seeing your regular OB/GYN or a fertility specialist? I hope you get some answers soon! I know it can be very frustrating!!!

I’m not seeing a specialist it was my GP that ordered the tests. Up until Nov I was having 25 day cycles and no issues. She did a blood pregnancy test when I was 10 days late for my first missed period and my hcg was under 1. I’ve since taken urine pregnancy tests all of which are negative. She said the reasons for taking the test were to see where to go from here. I did ask about the possibility of menopause but she said I’m 36 and have no symptoms so it’s unlikely. I’m actually feeling really healthy at the moment- I’m eating well and exercising and am less stressed than I’ve ever been due to some lifestyle changes/reorganisation of my responsibilities.
She said she is also testing my thyroid (my mum and aunties have thyroid issues) but I’m not showing any symptoms of anything. When I was due my first period I had really bad cramping and pains and this continued until about two weeks ago but all has stopped. With PCOS would there not be more symptoms than just missing periods?

Hi again! Actually i have very limited experience so i'm hoping someone else can chime in and answer your questions! I think the best thing to do is get your blood drawn for baseline testing and then have them keep monitoring you to maybe get some answers as to why you're having issues with your cycles now. I'm almost 41 so i was concerned about decreased reserve but my FSH number was normal. I'm sure yours is fine as well.

Are you tracking ovulation? The best way to know if you are ovulating is to measure you BBT. If you don't ever see a temperature rise, then you are not ovulating which could explain the missed periods. Sometimes that just happens and there is not always an assignable cause, but they can give you some medication to jump start your period and get you back on track if you need it. I think you're doing the right thing by going to your doctor and getting everything checked out.
