Question

Anti-depressants and pregnancy

Anyone taking/took Prozac while TTC or pregnant? What does/did your doctor say and how is/was your pregnancy?

Thanks!

I was on 20mg of paxil when i got pregnant the first time. I ended up having a chemical miscarriage. I do not know if it was the medicine or not but now i have weened myself down to 5mg every other day. I am so scared to conoletely stop but I did do research and i know that some of the medicine is preferred over others if it has to be taken. My gyno told me that about a month or so before the baby would be born i would have to stop taking the medicine...its a very confusing subject though. Good luck, talk to your doctor about cutting your dosage in half...

Oh really? My doc just told me to stop 6 months after taking it to see how it goes, but I had to go back on it after 3 weeks... I'm sorry about your chemical miscarriage. My doc also said that when I get pregnant I can just stop taking it, I'll have enough hormones to make up for my mood, etc lol. So, I'm confused. I don't do too well without taking it now.

I took myself off Lexapro when I got off BC about a month and a half ago. It is one that you shouldnt take while pregnant. I had a really hard time mood wise for about a month and was just not myself and depressed. But now i'm okay and my body has adjusted. Only thing is that I have to do presentations at work and public speaking freaks me out so I used to take Xanex to help with that. I am obviously not taking that anymore bc that is a big no no while pregnant or TTC. My doc prescribed me Busbar instead but it practically does nothing! haha. I guess that's why it is probably safe for pregnancy! It's so hard! I am trying to figure out an alternative but my doc hasnt been the best about getting back to me about it. I know that there are definitely some anxiety and anti-depressants you can take that usually ok for preg but nothing is 100% garaunteed to be safe. However, you may have a less healthy preg not taking meds bc you are more stressed, depressed, and anxious....

So, in some cases, even though there might me a slight risk of taking a medication...it's better than NOT taking it. Its a hard juggle though for sure. I struggle with that too! Just want whats best for the future baby though...either way. :)

As my psychiatrist and I have discussed at length you have to weigh up the risks versus the benefits. There is no way in hell my dr or I would be willing to take me off my meds.. Just not worth it (I have anxiety/depression/bipolar) there is not many proven studies to say that the medications can cause birth defects... There are assumptions but not many study's yet. From what my dr told me Prozac is the safest.. Unfortunatly for me it made me worse, so I just have to hope like hell there are no effects on the baby. I have moved onto the lowest dose of my seroquel and pristiq that I can manage on.. We went low low but had to increase it slightly. I guess the only pretty much guaranteed risk is that baby may have withdrawals from the meds when they are born.. But no point in having a child if you mentally and emotionally can't cope during pregnancy or after they are born. Good luck!

Directly from the package insert: Pregnancy Category C â?? PROZAC should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. All pregnancies have a background risk of birth defects, loss, or other adverse outcome regardless of drug exposure.
I would be too afraid to cause permanent damage to my baby's nervous system, as these drugs directly impact brain function. During my first pregnancy I avoided all medications, even gave up coffee.

Billie for some of us giving up all meds is not an option.. I'm sacred It will harm the baby.. But I also know there is no point of me having a happy healthy baby if I have a complete meltdown again and spend another few years in hospital. I want to do what's right by my child.. But what happens to be right for my future baby is being happy and healthy, which Unfortunatly means staying on meds.

My doctor said we won't know the effects of Prozac on babies for the next 60 years! So it's a risky game. I would definitely stop taking any meds if it was possible. But I also understand how it can affect the mother AND the baby being off the meds as well. Blah!

So, my doctor said I can go off Prozac if I get pregnant which I did. I got off Prozac right after I found out I was pregnant in 2013, and I am so glad I did. I pulled through alright. I mean, I was moody and depressed at times, but I was OK. I have a very healthy pregnancy and an incredibly healthy and smart baby!
If you can, I would suggest you to avoid meds while pregnant!
Hang in there!
TTC #2 now!

P.S. My doc said that since I'll be all "messed up" with hormonal changes due to my pregnancy, it's OK to go off depression meds. lol
