Nearly positive opk then negative?

So yesterday afternoon I took an opk, it was very nearly positive! Then this morning while the kids were still in bed I decided to do another one and its lighter than the one I did yesterday, this is the first cycle I've ever used them so im a complete noob, when is the best time to test? Should I try again at about midday? Or have I missed my surge? I'm so confused :-/
