what should one expect from a first RE appointment?

So monday the 14th I have my first RE appt. I have PCOS an have had 2 misscariages an a chemical. I do not want to be just treated for fertility problems I really want to be treated for my PCOS so I then can carry on with TTC. I want to be healthy before an when I do conceive again not just get pregnant from pharmaceuticals because they think thats all I want to achive! Has anyone gone through this what should I expect?

Hi there. With PCOS there is no such thing as a "treatment" for it. I have PCOS and my doctor said that the usual thing to sort out most of the issues is to get people to lose weight. Unfortunately I am not overweight, in fact I am slightly underweight, so that is not what is causing my issues. So they always recommend exercise and healthy eating. In terms of medication apparently metformin is good for those with insulin resistance issues.

So when TTC with PCOS usually all they are interested in is getting you to ovulate more frequently. If you ovulate then you can get pregnant (unless there are other issues). Usually the issue for women with PCOS is infrequent, absent or irregular ovulation. Hence clomid is most often prescribed to make you ovulate. It doesn't make you conceive and doesn't actually affect conception at all. All it does is induce ovulation.

I think different countries and even different clinics do things differently. At our first specialist appointment it was actually very quick. They already had all the relevant test and scan results they wanted (I had to get them done before the appointment) so we just had a brief talk about what the next steps were, got some information to take away and think about our options, and some prescription and blood test forms for if/when we decided to go the suggested route. Have you had any testing done yet? How long have you been TTC? We have been trying 2 years and 3 months. I had a miscarriage a year ago (baby was 10 weeks at the time) and no pregnancies since. We are booked in for IVF later this year as we discovered other factors which make it very unlikely we could conceive again on our own.

I have only had the reg blood screening from the ob. They never really say what it says to be honest. She refered me because of my pregnancy losses an she thinks its due to low orogesterone the 2nd half of my cycle. I havent had any scans or anything like that yet. Im hoping they will do a full work up when I go. I have a 14yr old daughter an have never used birth control so I guess ive been TTC for 14 yrs. This last 2 yrs I have conceived 3 times but have lost them all. 5 weeeks 9 weeks an 4 weeks. :(

Aw those multiple losses must be so hard :( I hope they do all the testing for you too. I was surprised at the lack of testing I got once I started seeing the specialist, but that was partially because I had just had a miscarriage, and because they already had a treatment plan they intended to use, and if that didn't work it was on to IVF. IVF circumvents pretty much all the problems so once I was on the list for that they said there was no point testing for anything else because the only solution was IVF which we were already planning to do!

Has your husband had a semen analysis? We were shocked at how much that can change. And a third of all infertility issues stem from the man so definitely worth checking out as his test is much easier and less invasive than almost anything you would get done!

No semen analysis yet were talking about getting that done soon. The appt went ok they took some more blood an when or if I get my cycle I have an ultra sound on day 5. Plus I have to take a class on charting there way. Im not even sure I ovulated this month! I was checking 2x a day there for awhile an then we were moving an altho the tests got darker they never read positive so im not even sure when to expect my cycle. So heres to waiting lol
