There is no one answer to how long the cramps will last. Some cycles I have absolutely no cramping whatsoever. Last cycle I had 8 days of cramping leading up to ovulation. It can be different for every woman and every cycle.
Ovulation itself is very quick. Something in the order of a few minutes. The pain you feel can be caused by a number of things. Wikipedia summarises them quite well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelschmerz
