Diagnosed with PCOS today...starting Metformin...advice plz!

Hello ladies!

I was diagnosed with PCOS today and I'm not sure how to feel about it. My hubby and I have been TTC for a year. I have wonky cycles and my doctor just persribed Provera last week to jump start my 3-month absent cycle. I got my period a day after the first pill, and only took one pill. The nurse said it was a fluke but lucky that my body started a cycle on its own.

Today I just got a call back from my gyn in regards to blood work and labs. I was told I have insulin resistance, but am not diabetic. They perscribed me Metformin and I start my first dose tonight. I will be taking 2,000mg per day (four pills - how insane!)

I'm not sure what to expect. Looking for advice on this medication - did you change your diet, etc. I also take a prenatal vitamin.

Anyone get a BFP with Metformin? Doctor isn't ready to put me on Clomid or Femara yet as I am healthy, and we are just actively trying.

Any tips + advice is much-appreciated! <3

Hi there!

I have PCOS too, and I was put on metformin as well by my gyn. However, my fertility specialist decided I wasn't insulin dependent and took me off...it didn't regulate me anyway. I ended up failing 2 rounds of Clomid before they sent me to a RE. He put me on Femara and a Pregnyl trigger shot which worked for me! Unfortunately I miscarried 1/1/15, but I after one failed round of Femara and Pregnyl I got another BFP! Still super early, but saying prayers to my angel baby for a rainbow baby ??

I'm a pharmacist - what I can tell you about metformin is that the biggest side effects are gastrointestinal. Most people complain of nausea and/or diarrhea when they take it. Those symptoms can resolve with time, and taking it with a meal can also help. Do you know if you are taking plain or extended release? The GI side effects tend to be much less with the extended release, so that is something to consider if your doctor started you on plain and you have difficulty tolerating it.

Hope this helps...Good luck and baby dust!

I was diagnosed with PCOS in 2007 and never put on Metformin until several years later. Came off of it in November 2012 (didn't get by the pharmacy in time) so I started both Metformin 1000 mg daily and 50 mg Clomid CD 2-6 in December 2012. December 27th I got my BFP and gave birth to my perfect baby boy on September 4, 2013. Since I was TTC off and on (mostly on, but didn't have insurance for a long time, so no Dr help) for 12 years to get my son, DH and I decided to TTC again when he was 4 months old. We tried with just Metformin 1cycle, Met and Clomid for 7 cycles, and Met and Femara for 1 cycle with no luck. DH is a soldier and was deployed to Korea for 9 months last September, so the TTC train came to a screeching halt! He comes home in 2 weeks, so we'll be starting back up again. Sorry for the novel, but if it weren't for Metformin, my son wouldn't exist. And I ALWAYS ovulate the first month I'm taking it.
