First attempt with Clomid.. chance of multiples??

Hi Ladies!!

My husband and I have been trying to conceive for a year and a half and we are starting clomid for the first time today. I was wondering if being put on 100mg vs 50 mg will increase our chances of multiples even more? Although I would be so happy with one, the thought of having twins is exciting! Twins don't run in our families, so I don't know if that would have a negative impact. We have been through a lot of testing and have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. Although the doctor thinks I'm ovulating, she thinks that my luteal phase may not be long enough during some cycles to support implantation. I am happy to know nothing is wrong with us, but at the same time its extremely frustrating to know that it's just not happening for some unknown reason. If I do regularly ovulate, do you think the clomid will help, and maybe bless us with more than one? Crossing my fingers this is our last month of trying and for all you out there in the same boat as well!!

Hi there. The chance of twins on clomid is 1%. Depending on how you are monitored that chance decreases as they try to minimise it as much as possible to avoid problems in pregnancy. For example, here in NZ if it looks like you are going to release multiple eggs they scrap the cycle and you are not allowed to try. Too much risk involved. Therefore the indicence of twins from clomid here is probably less. It is odd that they are starting you on a higher dose for your first time. Clomid has been shown to increase the risk of ovarian cancer so they usually try to minimise that by putting you on the lowest dose that will have the desired effect. My friend started on 25mg even! And yes, the risk of twins does up with dose. The chance of OHSS also increases. Are you going to be monitored?

The reason they will have you on clomid is because apart from inducing ovulation it also increases progesterone. That should help lengthen your luteal phase and allow implantation to occur if an egg gets fertilised.

I hope clomid does help you. We are on our 4th cycle of it and have been TTC almost 2 years.

Im actually not being monitored closely. I have a 5 week follow-up and that is it. I took my first dose last night and so far no side effects, thank goodness! I'm really hoping this will do the trick for us. If this cycle doesn't work for you, are you guys going to try IUI? My specialist wanted to do that this cycle for us, but we aren't ready yet. Hoping the clomid is the magic trick.

Don't relax about the side effects yet, mine don't start until after the second dose.

We are not planning to do IUI at all. The success rates with IUI are lower than using timed intercourse so unless you have a specific reason to go that route it isn't usually recommended. My husband's SA was absolutely fine so there is no reason for intercourse to not work. We had a miscarriage earlier in the year so I know we can get pregnant even without the clomid, but it just makes it so much easier as now I actually ovulate regularly.

That's a shame you will be unmonitored. It is really nice knowing that your estradiol is peaking before ovulation, and knowing your progesterone level after ovulation. First cycle I also had a scan the day of ovulation and could see the follicle and the thickness of my lining. My last cycle was unmonitored due to us being away on holiday but I am going back to being monitored this time.

What is your 5 week follow-up for? Will you have started on a second round of clomid if this cycle doesn't work?

It sounds like your doctor is on top of things. My follow up is pretty much to see if it worked and to just check in. She gave me a refill on my clomid because if it doesn't work the first cycle than I will start my second before I see her again. It's so discouraging sometimes, and you've been at it longer than us... we waited for 10 years for the 'best time' and now I feel like it's too late. My husband is more disappointed than me and it's sad to watch. How do you guys cope as a couple? My specialist does not believe it will happen without IUI but I'm crossing my fingers the clomid will give us the boost. I've never been pregnant yet, after trying for over a year and a half. Although.. I almost feel like I have and lost it before being able to tell. There have been months where I have symptoms, or just that feeling, then out of nowhere, late or early my monthly cycle arrives and its extremely painful (worse than hsg) to point where I almost pass out and (sorry if tmi) I have extremely heavy bleeding with some large clots. I don't know... just hoping it will happen soon. Have you tried anything else other than clomid? I'm a pharmacist (go figure) and know of a lot of supplements out there and remedies that women try... I didn't learn of these in school and don't trust where they come from, but at this point, I think I would try anything.

We waited a year after getting married before we started trying. Mainly that was because we weren't sure what was happening with my husband's work situation and thought we might be heading overseas. That didn't happen and now I sure regret that wait. We could be another year ahead in this journey. I get quite sad each month when it doesn't happen. Actually sad doesn't quite cover the depth of my feeling at that time. Of course the hormone drop has a huge influence on my mood then too. My husband is better about it, less hormonal :) He gets sad too, but I think because it's not his body that we are constantly monitoring it doesn't affect him quite as much. We have been fine as a couple because despite it all I am so happy to be married to him. Even if we never have kids having each other is better than not.

It really intrigues me that there are such different viewpoints on what is the best regime for treatment in different countries. I haven't tried anything other than clomid. My doctor doesn't believe there is any benefit to supplements (apart from folic acid). She thinks they are a waste of money. As a scientist myself I am inclined to agree! I try to eat right and a balanced diet should give you everything you need nutrient-wise. My biggest problem is I have PCOS. Usually treatable by losing weight, but I am the skinny kind so that doesn't help! It means that I ovulate irregularly, hence taking the clomid. It seems to have helped in that regard. Also improved my progesterone which is good.

What day of your cycle are you on? I am CD9. I have been ovulating round Cd15-17 on clomid so not long to wait now!

Hello :) saw this forum & I figured I would share my story.....

I took clomid 50mg in April on cd3-7 my ob/re did not monitor me....i conceived twins that cycle (fraternal) but it ended in a m/c in July....& just a lil heads up the chance of conceiving twins on clomid is about 12% not 1%....and that 12 is added to the % you yourself already have....twins do not run in my family or my hubbies....I just ov 2 follies that cycle which in honesty occurs in every normal ovulating women at least 10 times in their child bearing ages....(this is what my ob/re told me) if u do not want twins I suggest soy isoflavones first instead of clomid look it up & make your choice. But I took soy this past cycle first time & now I'm preggos again :) good luck!!!

I am currently CD5, so still awhile to go yet, as I normally o around cd 15-16. I'm definately nervous about the cloimid, but so far, side effects haven't been too bad. I understand the monthly depression cycle.. it's so tiring and I don't think my husband could even begin to understand. We've been together for 10 years, but waited until I finished school and got settled in a career, trying to be smart about it. I would give anything to go back and start trying sooner. Although I'm only 31, I believe I waited too long; especially to have a couple of children. My job is very stressful and I'm on my feet for 10-12 hours a day, being lucky to get a 5 min break somewhere in there. I know that doesn't help either.

Thank you for sharing your story ybelow11 and congrats!! It is nice to hear someone having success out there! How far along are you?

Quick question for you ladies (kinda personal - sorry!)... did the clomid make you dry? That is my main side effect and don't want it to harm our chances of conceiving..

Oops yeah you're right ybelow11. The 1% chance is for triplets. I think I mix that up because it just seems so ridiculously high.

1yearin I am usually quite dry so about a year ago we started using preseed as a lubricant when necessary. Last cycle on clomid i had heaps of EWCM so didn't need it. i think that was because I was keeping very well hydrated.

Thanks for the advice. I've increased my fluid intake and definately see a difference. Tonight is my last dose, thank goodness! Although my side effects wern't crazy, I think it's messing with me mentally. I almost quit my job today over nothing lol and cried all the way home. Did any of you experience this emotional side, and how long did it last? My job is extremely stressful, and the added moodiness does not help.

I almost quit my job over nothing when I got pregnant so I understand! I haven't had that kind of moodiness at the start of a cycle on clomid though. I do find I am VERY down and the end of a cycle.

Just had an estradiol blood test today. It hasn't gone up at all so looks like I am not developing any eggs :( Might be going up to 100mg clomid next cycle.
