About this symptom

Montgomery's Tubercles

Within the first few weeks after conception many women may notice tiny bumps on the areolas. These are Montgomery’s tubercles and are not a cause for concern. They are always present but may become more obvious during pregnancy. They are tiny glands that secrete a type of oil to help protect and lubricate the skin around the nipple during breastfeeding. Some also believe the odour of the oil may stimulate the appetite of the newborn. The number of glands varies between women from only 4 to 20 or more.

Includes: Changes in the small bumps around the areolas. These are always present but they become much more apparent during pregnancy.
