Question

TTC and Chronic Migraines

Hoping for some encouragement from another mom who has suffered from chronic migraines. I had a horrible increase in migraines with Mirena and am now panicked that increasing pregnancy hormones will have a similar effect. What's your story? (Trying to keep positive and make this TWW go faster!!)

My migraines increase in severity and frequency, during the first trimester, then I get maybe 1 for the rest of the pregnancy...but I'm medicated for them. With my first, I wasn't medicated and had quite a few throughout pregnancy. I would def talk to ur Dr and see if he/she can put u on a prophylatic. Beta blockers work well, and in lower doses, are pregnancy-safe (depending on the blocker, of course). Learn ur triggers and avoid them like the plague!!

I have suffered from migraines since I was 10 years old (so 21 years now), and I've had four babies. The first trimester was the hardest one to avoid migraines, then after that I would usually not have any! When I was pregnant with my second, I remember the second and third trimester were migraine free, and that was the longest period of time that I hadn't had a migraine since I started getting them as a child. Now I have discovered the book Heal Your Headache by David Buccholz, and he gives an exhaustive list of triggers to avoid. That list changed my life! It's been three years now, and I get them every few months instead of once a week or more like I did for so many years. If I stay extremely well hydrated and avoid the big ones, I can go for extended periods of time without a migraine, and I feel amazing, comparatively. It was getting too hard to take care of the kids with the constant migraines, so I'm really happy with the improvement, and I'm happy to stay off medicine.

Thank you tbstone & dakotagurrl for your input! I'm going to check that book out. Triggers for me are very elusive. It's frustrating. I saw my neuro yesterday and he gave me a new RX that is supposed to be relatively safe, so at least I'm not going into this un-prepared to fight them. Beta blockers give me a severely adverse emotional response, so I'm a little short on options. Currently seeing a therapist to learn some coping techniques for anxiety and pain. I'll update how they go.

I am about to leave for my yearly OB/GYN appointment that was scheduled months ago... I'm currently 8dpo and SO NERVOUS. Literally shaking inside - hoping so badly for an early BFP. If you think of it, send some good thoughts. I do the same to all the ladies here ttc.

Migraines + pregnancy = bad combination!

I've suffered from migraines for nearly 20 years (since I was 13, am 32 now). I have never been able to figure out the etiology of my migraines; they come out of nowhere it seems and are never predictable. I would take imitrex as soon as I began experiencing the visual aura and sometimes it would work, and sometimes it wouldn't.

Imitrex isn't safe while pregnant so I was looking for alternative ways to relieve the pain. I was able to stave off migraines during the first trimester by using magnesium oil on the soles of my feet every night before bed. I bought some at a health store, put it in a little spray bottle, and sprayed the soles of my feet every single night until I was about 22 weeks. And it really worked. I used it when I was breastfeeding as well and got tremendous results. I haven't had a migraine in a really long time!
