Strange bleeding

I've been trying to conceive for a year now. I've got two kids - 10 and 8.
Last cycle we had a lot of sex around the time I ovulated I thought for sure that we had done it. Day before my period started I had weird, stringy mucousy blood. Tested - negative.
My period started a day later - 3 days earlier than it should have. It was heavy for the first day and then lighter the following two/three days. This is normal for me. What wasn't normal was no period cramps. I usually have really bad cramps the first day and I didn't have any.

I took a test again (as a friend of mine had periods and didn't find out she was pregnant until 20 weeks!) After my period ended. It was negative.

Anyway my period ended 8 days ago. And 3 days ago I started spotting. It's a rusty colour and I've been spotting for 3 days now. I've lower twinges and pressure. It's an odd feeling

I'm concerned so I've made an appointment but has anyone had this before? And if so what was the outcome?
