Question

Age and my options....anything natural that works?

Just turned 47. Five children. Wanting one more with new partner he has none. Got pregnant 2 mths after no birth control, miscarried. That was 16 mths ago. Tracking ovulation with OPK's The positives are just barely positive and only get one that neg in a few hours. Gong to gyno to talk about options. What specific tests should they be running? And if everything seems fine do you think they will start me on clomid? My periods are regular.

The dr will probably check on your day 3 hormones (FSH, estrogen) and progesterone one week after ovulation. He might recommend AMH testing to check on ovarian reserve. (High FSH and low AMH are associated with lower egg count and lower egg quality meaning it will be more difficult to achieve pregnancy). Whether egg quality can be influenced is debatable; you can try supplements, nutrition, and acupuncture; but it's important to realize that with increasing age fewer eggs fertilize and lead to healthy embryos, hence the increase of miscarriages after age 40. Definitely, see your dr to discuss options. Clomid, Femara, HCG trigger shot, and injectables are worth considering to increase your odds. The very best wishes.

Isn't to risky for you to get pregnant right now? I'm 36 n I'm think time is ticking for me if I don't get pregnant with baby number 2. I have heard many stories..And they are kind of scare..The risk of having a baby with down syndrome is higher after Age 40...Good luck not I get pregnant congratulations n wish you a healthy pregnancy n baby..

@lilian, To not pursue pregnancy because of age or the possibility of having a child with disadvantages is silly in my mind. Although there is an increased risk for genetic problems at a more advanced age, even younger mothers are dealing with miscarriages and chromosomal issues. Actually, I find the well-meant point you are making annoying, using the term "too risky" but really meaning "too old". I applaud anyone trying to give pregnancy a chance regardless of age.

I had my last healthy baby at 40 yrs old. Yes as we age and of course egg quality goes down but our bodies are miraculous and thus the higher rates of miscarriage. I'm willing to take the chance and that's all that matters. You might not be willing but that's your preference. Lots of younger women have babies that have downs syndrome as well. I'm healthy and happy and able to support my children and its my choice and yes I'm aware of all the risks.
