Question

Two sacs showing at 5 (ish) weeks ?

So after some sever cramping and light bleeding I was given an early internal scan today. I think I'm just 5 weeks. The sonographer picked up two sacs ????

i'm booked in for another scan in 10 days as he couldn't see heart beats or much else but assured me at this stage that's normal??

I'm basically wondering how common this is? The midwife mentioned that they don't always both progress, I'm just massively shocked and feeling super anxious

first - congratulations on your pregnancy! 5 weeks are too early to see an embryo, and the heart only starts beating at 6 weeks (there is no heart at 5 weeks yet). in 10 days you shall be 6.5 weeks and they should be able to see more.
second - do not worry. twin pregnancies are not extremely common but not extremely uncommon either (c. 3%). the midwife is right - it can also happen that only one makes it. but if both make it - you will be a happy mother of two babies for the price of one so to say ;) great either way.

I did ivf and transferred 2 embryos so I wasn't shocked at 6 weeks to see 2 sacs. Only 1 had a heartbeat so I went back at 7 weeks and only 1 baby, the 2nd sac was already being reabsorbed. It's still early so you could have 2 but ending up with just 1 is still a possibility too. Most women don't even know if this happens because they don't get ultrasounds that early.

Congrats and just wanted you to know cramping and light bleeding occurred around 5ish weeks or so in my twin pregnancy and all was good. I did end up loosing one of my precious babies at 29 weeks but it wasn't related to what I felt early on. My surviving twin is now 15 mos going on 16 mos and I'm expecting again so stay positive.
