Implantation bleeding or not and when to take pregnancy test?

My husband and I had unprotected sex on Dec 8th. I have not had a period in 20 months since getting pregnant, giving birth and breastfeeding. On Dec. 20th I spotted light brown/pink on and off for 4 days. I've been lightly cramping, dizzy, and having headaches. I took an early result pregnancy test today (Dec 25) and it came back negative. Did I take it too soon? Do you think the bleeding was coincidentally my first period coming back?
