Question

How to BBT chart?

Second month of ttc #4. I know the signs with cervix checking and mucus but I don't know anything about BBT. I think that might be something to try this cycle but how do I start? What should I watch for? How will I know when to dtd?
Thanks in advance!
Happy 4th everyone!!!

Hi. I highly recommend reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility... it explains BBT charting VERY WELL. If you want to start right away you will need a specific BBT Thermometer (it reads temps to the nearest 100th of a degree). You should take your temp every morning at the same time before getting out of bed, moving around, talking, drinking, etc. and after 3 hours of consecutive sleep. The day after Ovulation you should have a temp spike and your temperature should remain higher until AF arrives (give or take a day) when it will fall back to your pre-O temps. As for knowing when to BD, you will have to learn your other fertile signs as charting only confirms Ovulation has taken place. It is a very beneficial tool when used in conjuction with OPKs, CM, etc. Rule of thumb is to BD every other day until your temp shift has occurred. I would recommend inputing your temps into an app or website (Fertility Friend is my personal favorite) and that way they will do the...

....calculations of the coverline for you (which is the most confusing part of charting). This site is ok too. I use both. It may take you a couple months to get the hang of it and be able to interoperate your charts on your own. It sounds far more confusing than it actually is. Good luck!

Regarding BDing - I should have typed that you should BD every other day from end of AF until temp shift has occurred... of course there are variations of that. We have no MF issues so we BD every other day from end of AF until I get a positive OPK then we do every day until day after temp shift.

Thank you MrsFord! Very helpful information! It's nice to know that you just need at least 3 hours of consecutive sleep because I work overnights occasionally and was worried about that! So does BBT charting show you that you released an egg then? Sorry if I seem a little dumbfounded, I took OPKs last cycle and BD during my positive time but didn't end up pregnant; hoping this will help pinpoint if I actually release an egg!
