how do i know if i had implantation bleeding or a light shorter menstrual cycle

my menstrual cycle is due sept 28 2011 but i started spotting a pinkish discharge on sept 25 2011 then it turned a brownish color very light for the next couple of days

If you chart your BBT you would know based on your temps going back up and staying high. Otherwise, the only option is to take a HPT and see what it says.
