Question

5 wks, 2 days with no heartbeat seen. OB thought I was 8 wks, 5 days. Advice?

Hi all. This is my first time pregnant and I'm really scared... could use some advice!
Based on my LMP I would be 8 weeks and some change, but my cycles have been really long and irregular so I just knew I wouldn't be that far along.
Sure enough, the ultrasound measured me 5 weeks 2 days and there was a sac but no heartbeat seen... This really concerned my OB. (There's also an unknown smaller sac looking thing that she says she cannot identify. Maybe a twin didnt survive?)

My first HCG levels was 5800, 40 hours later it was 9800, so my OB was encouraged but I go back for an ultrasound in one week to see if its growing.

Anyone have experience with this? My OB is kinda freaking me out, saying she can't say for sure I am still progressing.

It's still really early. Yes it's possible to see a heartbeat now buts it's also possible to NOT see one and things be ok.

Normally you won't see a heartbeat until 6 weeks along. It's a good sign that things are progressing since your HCG levels almost doubled in less than 48 hours. Try to relax, easier said than done, I know. Stress is not good for that little bean growing inside you.

In my experience that is normal. Both of my pregnancies that I have carried to term at the beginning have been way off from what the dr. thinks I should be. For instance: based on when my last period was I should be 5 weeks pregnant but only measure in every way including my HCG levels at abut 1.5 weeks. But in time the little babies caught up and were both born 3 days before EDD. As others have said, try not to stress heart beats are generally detected around 6 weeks, sometimes a little later. Your increasing levels are a great sign.

Thank yall so much for getting back to me. I'm truly not trying to stress too much, there's nothing I can do about it anyway! I'll update when I get my ultrasound.

Thats really unprofessional of her to freak out...your only 5weks! Usually you don't see a heartbeat until 8wks.
They didn't see a heartbeat on my baby until 8weks, so don't freak.

I had the same kind of experience 5 years ago and have a beautiful healthy little four year old daughter as a result of that pregnancy :). I went in to the ER at 7w2d (based on last period and according to my ob) because I didnt "feel" pregnant and had a little spotting . the er tested my blood& said my hcg was 3,200 (or something close to that) did an ultrasound and said they didnt see a heart beat and I only looked to be about 5 weeks. the Dr at the ER said I probably had a blighted ovum that had implanted but stopped developing a couple weeks back and it would probably pass on its own...... well 2 weeks passed no bleeding started & i still didnt feel pregnant I went to the er they tested my blood again Hcg was now over 30,000 :) ..... they did an ultrasound..... they found a heart beat and a baby...... guess i ovulated weird ..... I was only 7w3d but going by lmp I should of been over 9 .My point is your baby could be fine going by last menstrual cycle doesnt wo

Just to clarify... The doc said they couldn't "see" a heartbeat not "hear" one. I know you can't usually hear one for a while, but I think "seeing" one doesn't always happen until 6 weeks or so, but not entirely sure. Thanks guys for being so responsive!

Sounds like you have a longer than "usual" cycle like me! The gestational age based on lmp assumes you only have a 28 day cycle. If yours is longer, that assumption is false and therefore messes with dating. Your hcg levels are reassuring, try to be strong, I have a feeling your little bean is fine :). Lots of prayer and love and sticky baby dust to you. Keep us posted
