Ovulation date

I get so confused by the "days past ovulation (dpo)" thing. Which day is considered THE DAY for figuring out how many dpo I actually am? Someone please help me figure this out. Is it the first day of ovulation, the last day, or somewhere in between?

Your first dpo is the day after the day you ovulate. So just say for example you ovulated on August 22nd, August 23rd you would be 1 dpo.
