I haven't taken metoprolol before so I can't answer in that regard. The FDA has five categories to indicate the potential of a drug to cause birth defects if used during pregnancy: category A, B, C, D, X, and N (A being the best, X being the worse, and N meaning no data). The categories are determined by the reliability of documentation and the risk to benefit ratio. Metoprolol is a pregnancy category C medication, meaning that animal studies have shown an adverse effect and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women OR no animal studies have been conducted and there are no adequate studies in pregnant women. There are several conflicting studies though on the use of metoprolol during pregnancy that either do or do not show IUGR and low birth weight. This might be a silly question, but does your doctor know you're pregnant? Did he recommend you continue taking this medication?
