Question

20 follicles!?

My doc did a vaginal ultrasound on CD 14 and I had 20 follicles in one ovary measuring around 16mm. Is this normal?! We did IUI on CD 18 after a +opk but now I'm worried about PCOS, why would I have so many!? I'm 29, my husband has no sperm so we used donor sperm 10 million count on day of IUI. Unmedicated.

What are your thoughts?!

20 follicles without being on FSH injections.....this is quite a lot. What did your dr say? PCOS comes to my mind also.

She thought I could have a large egg reserve but she also was concerned about PCOS.

That seems like a lot did they let you continue with the iui? My doc wouldn't let me do an iui with more than 5 mature follicles

Yes we still did the IUI even with 20 mature ones only one should drop an egg cause I'm on no medications. Got my testosterone levels back today and they are normal. She says as long as I'm ovulating I don't have PCOS.

Hi! Are you sure they said each follicle measured 16mm?! That's crazy, I've never heard of that happening without injections (and a pretty high dose!) I have PCOS, but in PCOS, the problem is that you have too many SMALL follicles that don't usually grow, not too many mature or near-mature, so I highly doubt PCOS is the issue! Especially if you are regularly ovulating on your own (though that doesn't necessarily exclude PCOS completely). I'd ask them to check your LH, FSH, and AMH levels on cycle day 3 (but hopefully you are pregnant and there will be no cycle day 3 :)

Maybe 16mm was just one of the big ones and the others were just small? She didn't really clarify... I think she was just convinced I had PCOS because of my weight and age.

How'd everything turn out for you? 20 on each ovary, with ONE at 16mm makes much more sense. If you have 20 16mm follicles, you'd be in the hospital in severe pain, lol. But 20 on one ovary COULD mean PCOS, or just PCO (polycystic appearing ovaries, without the full blown syndrome). If your doctor seems concerned, then I'd ask them to test your hormones. But if you're ovulating on your own, there's probably no real need.
