Does total antral follicle count decrease after fertility treatment? Is it permanent or temporary?
I am undergoing birth control treatment to rest my ovaries before the fertility drugs are prescribed. I am going to do an egg retrieval for egg freezing purposes. I am 40 years old. I had a total of 14 antral follicles before the birth control treatment, today they found a total of 9 antral follicles. This is after the two weeks of birth control.

The number of antral follicles from one month to the next varies slightly, sometimes there are a few more, sometimes less. The overall amount of eggs decreases as we age and so does the antral follicle count over time. You won't see a drastic difference from one month to the next but for example with a couple of tests taken10 years apart you would.

Afc's can be pretty different every month no matter your age. Yes, it will decrease as you get older though. Also, your afc doesn't always mean that's how many eggs will be retrieved. I did 3 retrievals and they were all completely different even though I am 29 with a great ovarian reserve still. My first retrieval my afc was about 20 each ovary and I only got 13 eggs, 11 mature. My second my afc was through the roof like 30+ on each ovary and I got 23 eggs, 18 mature. My third my afc was middle of the road, 20+ each ovary, less than the time before, but I got more eggs, 24 retrieved and 21 mature. It really depends more on how you body reacts to the stims than on your initial afc.
