What's with this whole luteal phase thing?

I am newly TTC and AF reared her ugly head today :( I am not sure I calculated my luteal phase correctly last month. Does anyone know how to determine this? I've been reading up on it and can't get a clear cut answer. Just seems all very scientific to me. Any advice?

Luteal phase is from ovulation to period.
If you temp or use opk tests it will make it easier

Ok, I'll need to invest in this and buy a basal thermometer. When is the best time to take and opk test? I know I should start charting my temps today.

Start from cd1 if you like, I tend to chart bout cycle day 8 till ovulation
