Question

PCOS and weight loss

Hi everyone,

I have PCOS and after a lot of research (as the only advise from my doctor was to have sex 3-4 times a week), I found that weight loss is the first step to take in order to have more chances to be able to conceive naturally.

I am 5'2 and early February I weighted 12.3 stone (172 pounds). I then started to exercise and eat healthier and ended up losing 14 pounds in 2 months. I am now 11.3 stone (158 pounds).

I have read that losing weight decreases the chances of miscarriages, gestational diabetes, premature birth when you have PCOS. Does it mean I have to lose weight until I reach the "normal" range to start trying for a baby or is it already safe conceiving even though I am still overweight but have already lost 1 stone?

I would appreciate advise and also personal experience replies regarding this.

Thank you all in advance for your replies

Hello there! I was in the same boat! Diagnosed with PCOS - My Doctor put me on metformin, and that combined with a 10 pound weight loss helped me get pregnant (when we weren't trying!!) very quickly.

I would say with a 14 pound loss (CONGRATS BTW! That's not easy!!) you would be ok to start trying again - Just make sure to continue your healthy habits as you're TTC, because the healthier you will get, the more "inviting" your uterus will be for a fertilized egg.

Hi Beccalon,

(sorry I posted the reply by mistake lol)

Thank you for your reply.

My doctor didn't prescribe me anything to help with my PCOS. He just told me to have sex 3-4 times a week and if after 6-12 months I still havent got pregnant, to just go and see him again.

It is only because I bought myself books about PCOS and read online that I decided to lose weight to try to help. I am trying to follow the low GI diet but still allow myself to have some treat time.

Were you still overweight when you got pregnant and did you have any complications? Just that I am confused as I am unsure if it is still safe for me and the baby if I ever get pregnant when still overweight.

Thank you.

You might want to look into nutrition guidelines for PCOS because of insulin resistance. Also, Myo-inositol has shown to be helpful for PCOS sufferers. Best to you.

My RE said the best thing someone can do with PCOS besides weight loss is the get their hemoglobin a1c within the normal range. It's a blood test and related to insulin resistance, which we women with PCOS usually have and don't know it. I didn't know I had it until my a1c came back at 6%, which is prediabetes. I changed my diet after seeing a nutritionist, but posted a lot of info in my JEs. Check out my fav site for more info on PCOS: http://natural-fertility-info.com/?s=pcos. I'm not sure if beign overweight causes problems in pregnancy or not, but good luck to you!
