Question

Is it normal to have ovulation pains only on one side?

I started ovulation day 1 yesterday and had horrible pains on my right side. This has happened before previous months. I just don't remember this normally happening but now that we are TTC, I just seem to be noticing these more.

It is not uncommon to have ovulation pains on one side, some women are more sensitive to feeling their ovulation and as you said now that you are TTC your looking for any signs and symptoms. You usually only ovulate from one ovary each month, typically alternating between sides. It shouldn't be more than some mild cramping and maybe a twinge here or there. If it is more than that I would consult with your doctor. For me, I felt my ovulation our first month TTC but didn't feel it the second month and we ended up getting a BFP.

Since I started puberty I have felt ovulation pains. They are always on one side or the other. I have never had them so bad that I classify them as "horrible" though. It is just a tiny cramp for me. You may have always felt them but like slk6058 said, since you are ttc you are more aware of what is happening.
